Last year, thefts of tractor-trailers increased by 23% in Mexico.

According to a recent report from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions, the number of insured cargo trucks stolen in Mexico increased 22.9% year on year to 8,553 units in 2022 compared to ’21.

Last year, Kenworth tractor-trailers were the most stolen cargo trucks, with 1,902 units stolen, followed by Freightliner with 714.

The report, titled “Theft and Recovery of Insured Vehicles,” stated that 4,655 units were recovered after being stolen, an 8% decrease from the same period last year.

According to Norma Alicia Rosas, general director of AMIS, one reason for the increase in stolen trucks could be increased freight on the country’s roadways.

“By 2022, when there will be more mobility on the roads, we will have 8,553 stolen heavy equipment vehicles,” Rosas said during a video news conference.

According to Rosas, thieves frequently target cargo trucks carrying auto parts that can be sold on the black market.

“There is a market for illegally sourced auto parts, and these are very important in illegal market strategies,” Rosas said.

According to AMIS, the use of violence to steal trailers from roadways, yards, and other facilities increased by 80% year over year, totaling 507 incidents.

Mexico ranked first in terms of stolen cargo trucks, with 1,945 units, followed by Puebla (1,107), Guanajuato (776), Veracruz (707) and Jalisco (707). (630).
