Tesla is considering establishing an auto factory in Mexico.

According to Milenio, Tesla could soon announce its first automotive assembly plant in Mexico.

The automaker is said to be acquiring land in Nuevo Leon, a Mexican state bordering Texas, to manufacture the new Semi, an all-electric Class 8 truck.

“Tesla will arrive in Santa Catarina [Nuevo Leon]. The investment will be finalized in the coming weeks, [and] announced after the end of the year,” according to the document Milenio reviewed.

Santa Catarina is a small municipality near Monterrey, Mexico, about 140 miles from the United States-Mexico border crossing in Laredo, Texas.

According to Reuters, in October, Tesla CEO Elon Musk met with Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel Garcia and Ken Salazar, the US ambassador to Mexico, to discuss investments in the country.

Based in Austin, Texas The state government announced in August that Tesla has its lane at the US-Mexico border crossing in Nuevo Leon to facilitate trade for local automotive suppliers.

During a live event, Tesla debuted its long-awaited Semi truck earlier this month at the company’s Nevada Gigafactory.

During the Nevada event, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) delivered the first two Semi trucks to PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay.

Tesla, according to Musk, plans to increase Semi production to 50,000 units per year by 2024. Tesla has yet to officially announce the location of Semi production.
