Delta Air Lines announced late Friday that it has extended restrictions and stopped accepting all products destined for Montreal and Toronto at Detroit Metropolitan Airport due to limited access to roadways and bridges into the cities as a result of trucker-led protests against the Canadian government’s pandemic mandates.
The embargo is in effect until Saturday, according to a letter sent to customers by Delta Cargo (NYSE: DAL).
According to Canadian media reports, some routes in downtown Toronto are closed as officials prepare for weekend protests. On Saturday, a protest in Montreal will be held in solidarity with the convoy in Ottawa, where truckers and others have deployed their cars to block entrance to the Ambassador Bridge, North America’s largest commercial bridge.
Ontario officials have declared an emergency and have threatened truck drivers with jail time and other penalties if they continue to illegally obstruct international business. The embargo has severely hampered milk runs between car manufacturers and suppliers in the United States and Canada, forcing automakers to pause or reduce production. Trucking businesses have been forced to take hours-long detours to other land ports, affecting other industries as well.
