Later this year, Redwood Logistics intends to provide its customers with emissions tracking technologies as well as the possibility to acquire verified carbon offsets.
The Chicago-based company announced on Wednesday that its Redwood Hyperion platform will automate thorough load-by-load emissions calculations using data from its logistics platform as a service and RedwoodConnect.
“This, together with using the best calculation standards available, will offer our customers access to verifiable emissions of their whole freight footprint that would be difficult to quantify otherwise,” Redwood’s chief product officer, Michael Reed, told FreightWaves.
Redwood Hyperion is intended to complement Redwood’s existing green activities by assisting customers in reducing their carbon footprints and developing more sustainable and resilient supply networks.
“With data existing across systems and varying levels of precision,” Reed explained, “we have the integration capabilities and flexibility to retrieve the necessary data and adjust it to produce credible emissions measures.”

Carbon offsets for freight transportation
Measuring emissions is the first step toward lowering them and assisting businesses in meeting their sustainability goals. The opportunity to acquire carbon offsets through Redwood Hyperion is intended to assist businesses in reducing operational impacts that cannot be eliminated in the short term.
There is much disagreement concerning the value of carbon offsets. They may not be accurately monitored if they are not obtained through reliable firms. Even with reliable organizations, some mitigation techniques, such as tree planting, cannot guarantee that carbon will be sequestered in the event of a fire, flood, or drought.
However, decarbonizing the freight business is tough, especially if corporations want to reduce emissions quickly without incurring higher upfront expenses for alternative fuel or electric cars. This is where offsets come into play.
Redwood did not specify which projects or registries it intends to use for carbon offsets. Customers will be able to choose between biodiversity initiatives, nature-based projects, and projects that are geographically close to their activities, according to Reed.
“Moving freight consumes fuel until alternatives such as EVs or biofuel become the norm.” Carbon offsets will be a component in carbon-neutral shipping initiatives and an incentive to reduce your carbon footprint, according to Reed.
According to Reed, Redwood Eco Advisory can offer measures to reduce emissions such as modal conversion, load consolidation, or network optimization. Redwood Hyperion can mitigate any remaining pollutants.
Hyperion’s Background
The calculator takes its name from the “tallest living tree in the world,” a coastal redwood tree in California. According to Guinness World Records, it is over 380 feet tall and is estimated to be 600 to 800 years old.
According to a press release, “Hyperion was chosen as Redwood’s recognizable symbol of climate change while further strengthening Redwood’s logistics platform as a service ecosystem, bridging the gap between logistics and technology through an interconnected and open platform that allows for effortless scaling and logistics network design.”
According to the announcement, coastal redwoods can absorb up to 250 times more carbon dioxide than other trees.
“As the world becomes greener, cleaner, and more efficient, it is critical that our supply chains lead the way,” Reed added. “Becoming carbon neutral can appear intimidating and complex, but we’re aiming to alter that.”
